There are less than 55 Days until Christmas!

Merry Greetings and Happy Halloween!

In my home, Halloween is a wildly creative event. For years we have lived in humble circumstances and the kids have had to "make do" with whatever we have around the house for making costumes. What was once a necessity has become tradition. I can't wait to see what they come up with this week! But part of what makes Halloween so fun is that we recognize it as the kick-off to the holiday season. We take each holiday in turn but one great holidays folds into another as it culminates with Christmas. And as with all great build-ups, there are many elements that make the season bright. This merry version of our newsletter shows how things are building up online, too!

The Connection Between Halloween and Christmas

Imagine a holiday where people dress up in costumes designed to disguise their true identity and then they go from houst-to-house playing out the roles their costumes portray. Sound familiar? No, it's not a Halloween tradition -- it is an ancient Christmas tradition known as Mumming. Mummer's plays come in large varieties but it is a noted Christmas tradition dating back centuries in Great Britain and Ireland. Mummers today find Halloween, Christmas and New Year's all appropriate for the working of their craft. A Mummer's play often depicts the death and resurrection of a hero - or sometimes just venture into the silly comedy of the season. For most of us in the United States, our humble version of Mumming -- known here as Halloween -- is usually a great kick-off to the Christmas season.

Show us your goblins!

Other than Christmas morning there isn't a better picture taking opportunity with your kids during the entire year. This year we're inviting all our site visitors to upload their favorite shots of their ghosts and goblins in costume to the Merry Forums. We want to share...and we want to hand out a few little prizes! Please see the forums for more details.

Santa Speaks 2006 -- Our Annual Interview

He's back! Like clockwork every autumn Santa stops by to chat with one singular member of the media for an interview. After last year's combative interview Santa nearly wanted to scrap the whole thing. But he agreed to meet with a younger journalist and the result is a delightful conversation about the State of Christmas in the world today. Oh, Santa is candid as usual. He speaks on everything from playing with Barbies to what to do about the Cubs. Come see what Santa had to say as it is archived now at Santa Update.com.

Merry Christmas Radio is now on the air!

Finally! You can now listen to your classic Christmas favorites while surfing My Merry Chistmas (or any other website). Merry Christmas Radio is now live with our own stream of Christmas music. It's free and it's linked all over the websites of the Merry Network. We've greatly anticipated this project. And we're looking for help in making a go of it. Pull out your CDs and put together a suggested playlist of your holiday favorites. If we like the programming you put together we could give you your own timeslot on MCR. Please see the Merry Christmas Radio website for more details.

Introducing Christmas Flick.com

For years my good friend Jinglebelle has operated Jinglebell Junction -- a merry site full of Christmas resources for anyone looking to build a Christmas page or share a little Christmas cheer online. When she joined the Merry Network this year she brought with her some ambitions to branch out a little. The result of that is a great new website, Christmas Flick.com, a site devoted to Christmas movies. I hope she won't be upset with me for shining the spotlight on her but I was checking the site out this week and came away very impressed with her efforts. I just had to tell you about it. The site design is clean and easy. And it's set up to be a HUGE resource for breaking news on Christmas movies past and present. Please stop by Christmas Flick.com and have a look. Bookmark it and watch the newsletters here for more information as it becomes available. Nice work, Jinglebell!

Parting Shot...

For more than a year I have told the kids we were going to run our own Christmas radio station. This is a big deal to them because last year was the first time they ever heard me on the radio. Merry Christmas Radio is one of those "father's fables" that actually seems to be coming true.

For years I've done interviews on various Christmas topics on radio stations from all over but media coverage in our own backyard had been kind of scarce -- until last year when a local station had me on before the kids went to school. I got on the radio, talked about this and that having to do with Christmas and I didn't think a thing about it. But that night at home, to my kids at least, I was a rock star -- all because they heard me on the radio.

You can imagine the runaway thoughts they were having about our own station. I have had plenty of youthful volunteers who want sing and announce on Merry Christmas Radio. I've promised them all a shot. So, while nursing a nasty cold this week, I worked feverishly converting files for play online and finally on Saturday the 28th we flipped the switch. My son ran upstairs and raced through the radio dial to find all the great stuff we were broadcasting from our own home. When I explained to him and the others that it is an Internet radio station all my son could say was "Great, Dad. What good is that to us? We can't listen to it because you're the one always on the computer!". A rock star one day, a bum the next.

-- All the best, Jeff

Join our Merry Chat!
Every Sunday evening at 7pm EST the good folks from The Xmas Place gather for a little cyber-face time. It's a chat about all things Christmas. We encourage you to stop by our chat site at Christmas Chatter and make use of the facilities. It's free! (Hint: Most of the time the chat rooms are empty. This is a great little site to use for family gatherings because so few know about it. Recently we took a vacation and from a ship in the middle of the Atlantic we were able to chat with the kids via the Internet. It was awesome. Just don't tell anyone about it!)

Village People
As soon as folks start putting away the pumpkins they begin to think about putting up the tree. The very enthused about Christmas decorating -- and the smart ones -- are those who get out now before the snow flies to string lights. But there is one segment of the Christmas-decorating public who get right to work in the days after Halloween -- I call them Village People. We've all seen Christmas village displays...tiny little intricate buildings and city scenes lit up in festive Christmas lights. Where did such a tradition begin? Please see this link for more information on the history of Department 56 villages. And if you've got a picture of your Christmas village, send it in!

We're Not the Only Newsletter in Town!
You've got to see the newsletter put together by Homelights at The Xmas Place.
